Relay Performance of the Year 

This award is given to the best team relay performance, male or female.  The performance considered must be a finals performance, with special emphasis given to the 2009 FINA World Championships.

2009 World Championships - Men's 4x100m Free Relay

The U.S. men’s 4 x 100m free relay was the underdog to France at the 2009 World Championships, however, the team of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Matt Grevers and Nathan Adrian pulled off an upset on their way to World Championship gold. The race started with Michael Phelps’ opening leg that put the U.S. in third place. Lochte kept the U.S. in third, behind the French and Russian team. Grevers moved the U.S. into second place, just behind Russia, with France trailing the U.S. by just five one-hundredths. Over the final 100 meters, Adrian swam the race of his life to hold off both Russia and France. The U.S. won the gold medal by .31 over Russia and .68 over France.  

  

 

2009 World Championships - Men's 4x200m Free Relay 

The U.S. men were victorious for the sixth straight year in a major international meet in the men’s 4x 200m free relay. The team pulled out the gold by six-tenths of a second over Russia, breaking the world record by one one-hundreth of a second. Michael Phelps led off to put the U.S. in prime position. Ricky Berens split a personal best to give the U.S. a ead, and David Walters, kept the U.S. ahead by nearly one second. Ryan Lochte, then held off Alexander Sukhorukov of Russia over the final 200 meters for gold.

 

    

2009 World Championships - Men's 4x100m Medly Relay

The U.S. men’s team of Aaron Peirsol, Eric Shanteau, Michal Phelps and David Walters won gold in the 4 x 100m medley relay at World Championships. Peirsol led off the relay, setting a championship record in the 100m back. The U.S. had a .08 lead after that first leg, and Shanteau kept the U.S. in the hunt. Phelps then swam the fastest 100m fly split in history to give the Americans a solid one second lead heading into the final leg. Walters, swimming the anchor leg, carried the U.S. to the world-record victory.
